Goggles

The right ski goggles for your requirements

Who does not know this problem? Within a few minutes the sky darkens, the clouds move in front of the sun and it suddenly becomes dark. The weather in the mountains can change drastically within a few minutes. If you wear the wrong ski goggles now, the day of skiing will be difficult to come to a happy ending. Sport Bittl provides you with helpful hints overview of the different spectacle and disc types.

The requirements for ski goggles have risen sharply in recent years. For a long time now, there are only the "one" classic orange or yellow tinted glasses for all weather. As a first important point, all glasses have 100% UV A / B / C protection. Also, the discs are unbreakable, so it comes even with serious crashes to no splintering of the disc.

Double discs are now standard in ski goggles, only in the entry-level children's eyeglasses there are occasionally still models with only one disc.

Before we go into the most important topic - the spectacle lenses - from Sport Bittl, we will give you further important features to consider when buying your ski goggles.

Helmet Compatible:
The ski goggles should definitely fit the ski helmet. The helmet must not press on the glasses and thus on the nose. At best, the goggles close at the top and sides of the helmet, so that no wind can reach your face. A large number of ski goggle straps now have silicone-coated straps so that the ski goggles can no longer slip.

field of view
A large field of view is of enormous importance in order to be able to perceive movements or terrain changes at the edge of the field of view. If you only have a limited field of view, you will have to work harder. This leads to fatigue of the eyes as well as their physical strength and can thus impair safety during skiing. A multitude of ski accidents is due to poor perception.

In the course of a day of skiing light and slope conditions are constantly changing. For the different conditions, different lenses can be used. Here is an overview:

Category transparency of application
Category 0 80-100% enormous cloud cover, night skiing
Category 40-80% cloud cover, snowfall, rather difficult lighting conditions
Category 2 18-40% All-round disc for changing light conditions
Category 3 8-18% sunny days
Category 4 3-8% extreme sun, suitable for glacier skiing
spherical discs

Many manufacturers use spherical discs. These consist of a double glass construction and are based on the curvature of the human eye. This causes objects to be seen through the ski goggles as they actually are. Through this type of discs light rays hit undistorted and directly on the eye and allow a perfect view.

The most popular are category 2 ski goggles. Here a slight mirror coating is used to reduce the sunlight, but to have perfect visibility even in snowy or foggy days, the glasses have a contrast-enhancing or brightening disc.

self-tinting discs
Ski goggles are increasingly being produced with self-tinting windows. These have the advantage that they react to UV radiation and accordingly darken. Such a disc usually has category 1 as a basis and then darkens to category 3.

Replacement lenses
Another possibility is through glasses with interchangeable lenses. Here either discs can be completely replaced or a second disc can be used on the goggles. Thus, you can use the perfect match for different weather conditions.

Sport Bittl wishes you a snowy winter with a perfect view!
