A test report by Fabian from the online marketing team.
Advantages at a glance:
- Extremely lightweight helmet (only 265 grams in size M)
- Best ventilation thanks to 24 vents
- Good aerodynamics
- Outstanding safety thanks to Mips technology and Spherical 2 shell construction
- Precise and comfortable fit
- Chic look & high quality workmanship
First impression:
The helmet makes a chic impression in the white color and one thing is immediately noticeable when unpacking: He is sensationally light! With only 265 grams in size M, he convinces even absolute weight fetishist:in. No wonder that even cycling professionals rely on the new Giro helmet! It meets all the criteria that count for hobby riders and professional athletes alike. The classic areas of use are triathlon, road bike, cross and gravel, but the helmet is also suitable for mountain biking or for rides in the city. When trying it on for the first time, I immediately notice that this helmet fits and is extremely comfortable. With the rotary wheel for width adjustment at the back of the head, the Roc Loc 5+ Air adjustment system, you can adjust the Giro Aries Spherical very fine and precise fit and then it really fits like a glove!
Top security!
The Californian high-end manufacturer Giro relies in the Aries Spherical not only on the already proven Mips technology, which meets the highest safety standards, but also combines this with its own further development.
The helmet convinces in terms of safety especially by the Spherical construction: The Aries Spherical consists of two helmet shells that are connected with ball joints floating and absorb and deflect the forces in any impact significantly better and thus increase safety.
Off on the bike: the practical test!
But now it's time for the practical test: Off in the bike gear and up on the gravel bike! The route leads into nature: road and gravel alternate and both on the plain and on longer climbs in the forest, the helmet is now put through its paces. Only as far as a fall on the head is concerned there will hopefully never be a practical test for me, I leave that to the Giro test lab and pain-free dummies.
When driving I quickly notice that the ventilation on the whole head is excellent, since the helmet is only on the forehead and with a small pad on the middle of the skull, there is plenty of surface area for cooling by the airstream.
Thus, it conveys a very airy feeling throughout and the 24 ventilation openings are definitely noticeable. Only the snap closure is not so easy to open, especially with bike gloves and seems a bit stiff, but when opening the helmet you ideally stand anyway and thus have two hands available for it.
Uphill? Everything easy!
Finally, there are still some longer and sweaty climbs ahead and even here the new Giro helmet convinces: The padding over the forehead effectively prevents sweat from running into the eyes. In addition, the pleasant wearing comfort remains, even if the skull expands a bit when sweating, there are no pressure points, neither the helmet itself nor the closure strap.
As a passionate cyclist, I've driven quite a few helmets, but especially in terms of the light, barely noticeable wearing sensation, the Giro Aries Spherical plays in a league of its own. The very efficient ventilation also struck me positively, especially on longer rides in the warm season, this is a really important point.
All the details of the helmet also seem extremely well thought out and sensible, from the adjustment system to the large and numerous ventilation openings. At the same time, the Aries Spherical makes an extremely solid impression: It convinces with a high-quality finish and nice details, such as the rubberized mounting points to attach your sunglasses to the helmet when you're not wearing them.
Our conclusion:
For all helmet muffle applies: With this helmet there are really no more excuses, because the top comfort coupled with the outstanding ventilation ensure that you hardly notice the helmet when wearing. The chic look convinces both passionate athletes:inside as well as the lifestyle cruisers who are mainly in the city on the road. Also in terms of safety, the helmet leaves nothing to be desired and I am thrilled by the amazingly low weight. Thus thumbs up, the new Giro Aries Spherical keeps what it promises and convinces all along the line: light, airy, casual and safe - more is not possible!
