Stand Up Paddling (SUP), also known as Stand Up Paddle Surfing is THE trend sport of the last years. When SUPing the athlete stands upright on a boar (specially designed for this sport) and moves with the help of a paddle.
Originally, this type of movement was developed by Polynesian fishermen, who moved in their canoes mainly standing on the sea. Even today, there are fishermen in Asia who use sticks or paddles to advance in a one-man bamboo raft.
In the twentieth century, surf instructors in Hawai had been SUPing on their boards to get faster from the shore to the breaking riffs and back. In addition, they had a better overview of their surfing students.
Only recently Stand Up Paddling has developed as a trend sport.
